About Child Benefit

You get Child Benefit if you’re responsible for one or more children under 16 (or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training). There’s no limit to how many children you can claim for.
Only one person can get Child Benefit for a child. You must report any change of circumstances to the Child Benefit Office. You may have to pay a tax charge if your (or your partner’s) individual income is over £50,000. You can choose not to get Child Benefit payments, but you should still fill in the claim form because it will help you get National Insurance Credits which count towards your State Pension. It will also ensure your child is registered to get a National Insurance number when they are 16 years old.

Child Benefit is usually paid every 4 weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. There are different payment dates if it’s due on a bank holiday. You can get Child Benefit paid weekly if you’re a single parent or if you or your partner are getting certain benefits, such as Income Support. You can check your award notice to find out when your first payment is due. You can count forward 4 weeks from this date to work out when you’ll get it next. You might not get your first payment for 12 weeks (it can be longer if you’ve just moved to the UK). It will be backdated for up to 3 months.

Your Child Benefit stops on 31 August on or after your child’s 16th birthday if they leave education or training. It continues if they stay in approved education or training, but you must tell the Child Benefit Office. You’ll be sent a letter in your child’s last year at school asking you to confirm their plans. Tell the Child Benefit Office about any changes to your family life. If you don’t, you may not get all the money you’re entitled to, or you may be overpaid and have to pay money back.
